188 Lafayette Street – Window Graphics & Landmark Rules

Important: This Building Is in a Landmark District

188 Lafayette Street is located within the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District, a designated NYC Landmark district regulated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC).

Because of this designation, the building façade — including the exterior side of the windows — is protected by law.

What This Means for Your Window Graphics

✅ Allowed

Second-surface (interior) vinyl onlyInstalled on the inside of the glassPrinted in reverse so it reads correctly from the streetSubject to Parasol approval prior to production

❌ Not Allowed

• First-surface (exterior) vinyl
• Exterior decals or gradients
• Any adhesive material applied to the outside of the glass
• Any alteration to brick, cast iron, façade, or window framing

Even fully transparent or optically clear vinyl applied to the exterior is considered an exterior alteration and requires Landmark approval.

Why Exterior Vinyl Is Not Permitted

Exterior applications in Landmark districts require formal LPC approval. This process:

• Can take weeks or months
• Is not guaranteed
• Often exceeds the timeline of short-term pop-ups
• May involve filing fees, drawings, and professional submissions

Because of this, Parasol requires all window graphics at this location to be installed on the interior.

If You Would Like to Pursue Exterior Graphics

If your brand wishes to explore Landmark approval for exterior signage:

1. Written notice must be provided to Parasol.
2. Landmark approval must be obtained directly from NYC LPC.
3. All filing, consultant, and permit costs are the responsibility of the Licensee.
4. Installation must comply with Landmark requirements.

Please note: For short-term activations, Landmark approval is generally not practical.
