Can I Drill or Mount Into the Walls and Ceilings?
Standard mounting into drywall is permitted, as long as the installation does not create excessive damage or oversized holes.
As a general rule, holes should be no larger than 1/4” in diameter. A small number of standard screw or anchor holes can typically be handled through basic patching. However, installations that create extensive or concentrated wall damage requiring skim coating or resurfacing will be billed separately.
When Is Skim Coating or Excessive Repair Required?
Skim coating may be necessary when there are too many holes or too much concentrated damage for basic individual patching to properly restore the wall.
Examples may include:
- A wall with 20+ hooks, nails, anchors, or mounting points
- Multiple rows of shelving, such as 6+ rows of shelves installed in one area
- Dense grids of merchandise displays, artwork, signage, or other wall-mounted fixtures
- Large or heavy-duty anchors that leave holes larger than 1/4”
- Installations that tear or remove the drywall surface during load-out
- High tac vinyls, wallpaper or other adhesive that rips off the wall paint.
- Any installation that leaves widespread or uneven damage requiring the wall to be resurfaced rather than simply patched
If your installation involves a large number of mounting points, please send us your plans in advance so we can review the proposed installation and advise on any potential restoration requirements.
Where Is Drilling Not Permitted?
Drilling is not permitted into:
- Storefronts or building facades
- Glass
- Doors, door frames, or window frames
- Brick or masonry surfaces unless specifically approved
- Tin ceilings, including at 173 Elizabeth Street and 188 Lafayette Street
- The brick vaulted ceiling at 262 Mott Street
Other surfaces or architectural elements may also have space-specific restrictions.
Please Send Us Your Installation Plans
Before installation, please run your general installation plan, drawings, or mockups by the Parasol team, particularly if you are installing shelving, signage, artwork, displays, or anything requiring multiple attachment points.
If possible, show us what is being mounted, where it will be located, and how you plan to attach it. We can review the proposed installation, flag any restrictions, and recommend alternative mounting methods where needed.
If you are ever unsure whether you can drill or attach something to a particular surface, please check with us before proceeding.
This article is a general summary for convenience only. The executed Parasol Projects License Agreement governs in all cases.
